Men's Tennis Battles No. 10 Morningside in Tight Match

North Newton, Kan (March 13th)-  The Bethel College men's tennis team went toe-to-toe with No. 10 Morningside on Thursday, pushing one of the top teams in the nation to the brink before ultimately falling 5-2 in a closely contested match at the Ward Tennis Center.

Doubles play was a nail-biter, with Bethel striking first as Zaidh Zihar and Petr Kollar claimed a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Morningside responded by taking No. 2 doubles, setting up a decisive No. 3 doubles showdown. James Menard and Billy Haoda built a 5-3 lead but couldn't close it out, as Morningside came back to steal the match 7-6, securing the doubles point.

Singles action featured five of six matches going the distance, demonstrating Bethel's grit against elite competition. Jorge Batista picked up a thrilling three-set victory at No. 1 singles, outlasting his opponent 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. Zaidh Zihar also delivered a hard-fought win at No. 3 singles, taking the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Despite battling deep into third sets, Petr Kollar (No. 2), Rodrigo Sanchez (No. 4), and Billy Haoda (No. 5) all came up just short, while Jonah Bergeron fell in straight sets at No. 6 singles.

The Threshers will look to regroup quickly as they travel to Leavenworth to take on Saint Mary Saturday at 11 a.m.
