LINDSBORG, Kan. - The Bethel College Football team looked to keep their undefeated season alive as they took on the Bethany Swedes. After holding onto a 14-7 lead at the half, the Threshers scored 28 unanswered second half points to take a 42-7 victory.
The Threshers opened the contest with a 13-play 60-yard drive that was capped off by a
DJ Ciers 1-yard touchdown drive. A big chunk of the yardage on the drive came when Ciers found senior wideout
Brayden Francis for a 32 yard pitch and catch.
Bethany answered back on their ensuing possession with a 52-yard touchdown pass giving bot hteams opening drive scores.
Kayden Christiansen gave Bethel the lead back just before the end of the opening period when he punched one in from six yards out.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the first half as Bethel took a 14-7 lead into the intermission. After giving up 63 yards on the opening possession, Bethel's defense held the Swedes to just 53 yards of total offense.
The Thresher defense stepped up to the occasion once again to begin the second half. After forcing a Swede punt on the first possession of the third quarter, Bethel had Bethany with their backs against the wall as they tried to punt. The Swede long snapper snapped the ball over the punters head and into the end zone where
Dagen Goodner pounced on the ball for a Thresher touchdown.
Bethel's offense got back in the end zone following a
Doug Grider interception. With a drive that spanned the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth, the Threshers ran 11 plays and went 77 yards capped off with a Christiansen 1 yard touchdown run, his second of the contest.
Ciers showed off his arm in the Threshers next two drives that saw the offense score two touchdowns on back to back offensive plays with a Swede three-and-out sandwiched between. With the offense firing on all cylinders, Ciers found Francis for a 61-yard touchdown pass followed by a 43-yard touchdown pass to
Trevon Madison.
The Threshers were knocking on the door once again late in the fourth quarter before
Scott Grider coughed up the ball on the one yard line where the Swedes recovered in the endzone for a touchback.
Carson Sauseda has started his collegiate career going 12-12 in extra points.
The Thresher defense played phenomenally after the Swedes opening drive. Bethel held Bethany to -51 yards rushing for the contest and 211 through the air for 160 yards of total offense. Bethel rushed for 267 yards and threw for 209 yards for 476 yards of total offense.
Bethel will be back in action on Saturday, October 8th as they host Southwestern College to cap off Fall Fest festivities with kickoff slated for 6:00 PM.
