No. 9 Football drops top 25 battle to no. 24 Avila 28-14

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The no. 9 ranked Bethel Threshers took on the no. 24 ranked Avila Eagles in a top 25 matchup Satruday afternoon. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead in the first half, the Threshers gave up 28 unanswered points to the Eagles as Avila won the top 25 matchup.
 
The Threshers struck first at the 6:49 mark in the first quarter when Chantz Scurry punched one in from four-yards out. The scoring drive was set up by an Avila punt that went two yards. The Threshers ran seven plays before Scurry capped of the 31-yard drive.
 
Bethel struck next to take a 14-0 advantage. This touchdown was set up by a forced fumble by Ernest Ferrier III recovered by John Henson at the Avila 7 yardline. It took the Threshers just three plays to get into the endzone as DJ Ciers found Trevon Madison for the five yard touchdown pitch and catch. 
 
Four plays after a Robin Neely interception, Ciers was sacked at the Bethel one yardline. He fumbled the ball on the play and the Eagles recovered it for a touchdown making the score 14-7 going into the break.
 
Avila turned in a seven play 75 yard drive to open up the second half to even the score 14-14. 
 
On the Eagles ensuing drive they went 80 yards on 10 plays to take the lead 21-14. 
 
Avila got into the endzone one more time in the fourth quarter with just over two minutes left in the contest putting the game away as they took the battle of top 25 teams 28-14.
 
The Threshers offense was held to just 41 yards of total offense in the second half. They were held to just 142 yards of offense in the loss. The Thresher defense gave up 320 yards of total offense in the contest. 
 
Bethel will be back in action on Saturday, October 22nd as they are back at home to take on the Sterling Warriors.
