NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - The Bethel College Women's Basketball team took on the Avila Eagles Saturday evening inside Thresher Gym in what would be five seniors final competition in their home gym. After
Josie Calzonetti tied the contest with under 20 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, Avila held the lead for the whole overtime period as they took the 76-74 victory.
After the opening quarter, the Threshers held on to a five point lead, 20-15, behind 7 points from
Alex Bearup and 5 from
Sydney Tenant. In the opening frame, the Threshers shot over 63% from the field and exactly 50% from three point range. The Eagles were able to cut into the Threshers lead in the second quarter after shooting over 60% from the floor themselves in the period. Bethel held onto a 37-35 lead at the intermission.
Avila kept their hot streak alive coming out of the break shooting over 57% from the floor and outscoring Bethel by eight, 21-13 in the ten minutes. Bethel picked it up in the final ten minutes of regulation as they shot 50% from three point range again led by Calzonetti who went 2-2. The Threshers were able to tie the contest up in the final seconds to force an overtime period. The Eagles scored first in the overtime period and held the lead throughout.
