Softball Splits with Bethany on Senior Day with a slugfest game one victory

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - The Bethel College Softball team hosted the Bethany Swedes for their final two contests of the season. The Threshers mounted a huge comeback in game one after trailing by 7 runs to take a 15-13 victory. Bethel lost game two in extra innings 4-3. Before the contests the softball team recognized its four student-athletes leaving the program following the conclusion of the season, seniors Bailea Crist and Peyton Uznanski and juniors Karellys Porras and Abigail Walker.

GAME 1, W 15-13

The Swedes took control of the game early pouring 5 runs in during the opening frame. Bethany pushed another run across in the top half of the second inning to take a 6-0 advantage. Marissa Harrison put BC on the board with a solo homerun to left field in the bottom half of the second inning. From this point on Bethel tied or won every inning offensively. Both teams scored two runs in the third with Bethel's coming on a Peyton Uznanski two-run homerun scoring Abigail Walker. With the score 8-3, the Swedes put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the pressure on the Threshers to avoid the run rule. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Crist had an 0-2 that eventually ended with a 2 RBI single that would jump start a 7 run rally in the inning. The inning included Uznanski reaching on an error, Lynzie Myrick hitting a 2 RBI double, Lauren Hurd hitting an RBI single and Dakota Piovesan hitting an RBI single.

The score now tied 10-10, Bethany came back up and took the lead back two innings later. Down 13-10, Bethel once again put together a big inning as they put another crooked number on the board. Piovesan started the big inning with a three run homerun to left field tying the game. Karellys Porras then turned in an RBI groundout followed by an RBI single from Brianna Reeves. The Threshers now led 15-13 and freshman Reagan Robinson cae in to close the door on the Swedes as she came in and went three up three down recording three flyouts.

Peyton Uznanski - 3/4, 3 R, 2 RBI, HR
Marissa Harrison - 2/3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, HR
Lynzi Myrick - 1/1, 2 RBI, R
Lauren Hurd - 1/1, R, RBI

GAME 2, L 4-3 (8 inn.)

Game two was the exact opposite of game one, neither team had many hits and both teams played much more sound defensively. The Swedes once again got on the board first with a solo homerun in the third inning. There were only three hits total between the two teams heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Swedes with 2 and Bethel with 1. Crist however found other ways for the Threshers to score as she drew a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch all while Uznanski was at the plate. Bethany once again put the pressure on the Threshers offense as they put up two runs in the top of the 7th inning. Bethel needed to score at least two runs to keep the contest going. They did just that as their first two batters were hit by a Bethany pitch. The lead runner advanced on a strikeout and the trail runner advanced a pitch later putting two runners in scoring position for Reeves. She then ripped a double down the left field line scoring both runners and tying the contest at 3 all. The next two batters to come to the plate couldn't drive Reeves in as we went to extra innings at Allen Wedel Field.

The Threshers were able to get the first two batters out but the runner, who was placed on second base to start the inning, advanced to third on the second strikeout. The following batter hit a bloop single into left scoring the run and once again putting the pressure on the Threshers bats. Hurd started the inning off with a bunt single advancing the Threshers runner, Uznanksi, to third. After Hurd stole second base, the next three Thresher batters to come to the plate all struck out as the Threshers failed to complete the comeback for the second time on the night.

Lauren Hurd - 2/4
Brianna Reeves - 1/2, 2 RBI, 2B
Reagan Robinson - 8 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 7 SO, 2 BB
