SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Bethel College football team's upset bid of No. 9 Evangel fell short as they dropped the double-overtime shootout 41-38.

The Valor struck first with a field goal early in the first quarter.Â

Bethel responded by scoring 21 unanswered points as
DJ Ciers connected with
Trevon Madison from 3 yards out and
Mario Quintero from 13 yards.

Ciers punched in the Threshers' third touchdown with his legs from a yard out. Ciers' touchdown run was set up by a 33-yard pitch and catch with Madison.

Evangel cut into the Bethel lead with a minute left, making the score 21-10 at the break.

Bethel scored the first ten points of the second half as
Carson Sauseda made a 43-yard field goal and Ciers ran another one in from 2 yards out.Â

With the Threshers leading 31-10, the Valor came roaring back, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to tie the contest at 31-31 and force overtime. The Threshers had a chance to take the contest in regulation but had their field goal attempt blocked.

Bethel got the ball first in the overtime period and went the 25 yards needed capped by a 5-yard pass from Ciers to
Jared Givens.

Evangel responded with a touchdown of their own, followed by a field goal on their ensuing possession in the second overtime period.Â

Once again, the Threshers had their field goal attempt blocked by the Valor as they held off the upset attempt taking the contest 41-38 in double overtime.

Ciers finished the contest 27 for 37 for 304 yards, while running for 104 yards on 23 attempts.Â

Tucker Smith led the Bethel receiving core pulling in 5 passes for 98 yards.

Kade Miller led the defense with 9 tackles, 4 solo.

The Threshers finished their season 6-5, their fifth winning season in a row.
