McPherson, Kan. — October 19, 2024
The Bethel College Threshers faced a difficult challenge on the road, falling to McPherson College 35-10 in a hard-fought KCAC matchup. Despite some bright moments, Bethel was unable to keep pace with McPherson's offense, which exploded in the second half. The loss drops Bethel to 4-3 on the season.
First Half: Defensive Battle Gives Way to Late McPherson Surge
The game started with both teams locked in a defensive struggle, as neither offense could find its rhythm. Bethel opened the scoring midway through the second quarter with a 21-yard field goal by Matteo De Hoyos, capping off a 14-play, 80-yard drive that ate up nearly seven minutes of clock. This gave Bethel a brief 3-0 lead.
McPherson responded quickly, however. Just minutes later, McPherson's quarterback connected on a 24-yard touchdown pass, and a successful two-point conversion pushed McPherson ahead 8-3. Disaster struck for Bethel on the final play of the half, as a blocked field goal attempt was returned for a touchdown by McPherson, putting the Threshers down 15-3 at halftime.
Second Half: Ciers' Long Run Offers Hope, But McPherson Dominates
Bethel came out of the locker room determined to fight back. Early in the third quarter, Ciers broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run, bringing Bethel within striking distance at 15-10. The Threshers appeared to have momentum on their side, but McPherson responded immediately.
On their next possession, McPherson delivered a back-breaking 77-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 22-10 as the third quarter came to a close. McPherson then added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter putting the game out of reach.
Looking Ahead: Nationally Ranked Opponent Awaits
Bethel will look to regroup as they return home next weekend for a crucial matchup against nationally ranked Southwestern College. The Threshers will need to bring their best effort as they face one of the top teams in the KCAC, hoping to bounce back and strengthen their postseason ambitions.
