In a hard-fought contest at Mabee Arena, Bethel (Kan.) pulled off a strong win over Wayland Baptist (Texas), finishing 84-77 in a thrilling matchup.
First Half
Bethel came out with intensity, quickly establishing their presence on both ends of the court. With an explosive start, they built an early lead, thanks to strong play from Carmelo Yakubu and Harper Jonas, both of whom helped Bethel achieve a 19-point advantage at one point. Bethel capitalized on their efficient shooting and took control of the game with a 15-4 run midway through the half. Their defense was equally impressive, forcing turnovers and securing rebounds. By halftime, Bethel held a 49-34 lead, showcasing their offensive prowess with a 67.9% field goal percentage for the half.
Second Half
The momentum shifted as Wayland Baptist fought back, narrowing Bethel's lead with a series of three-pointers and quick baskets. The visitors pulled within one point (49-48) early in the half after a sustained 14-0 run. Bethel responded with critical plays from Nick Bonner and a huge dunk by Christion Whitaker, who managed to regain momentum with timely scores and crucial defensive rebounds. Harper Jonas added a clutch three-pointer late in the game, widening the gap and helping Bethel hold onto their lead down the stretch.Â
