NORTH NEWTON, Kan.—The Bethel College women's basketball team edged out Friends University in a thrilling 73-69 victory on Wednesday night at Thresher Gym. The Threshers (4-6,3-1 KCAC) showcased resilience in a back-and-forth battle, holding off a late rally from the Falcons (5-4, 3-1 KCAC) to secure the win.
Natalie Richards led Bethel with 16 points, including two crucial baskets in the final minutes. She also added six assists and four rebounds in a stellar all-around performance. Madyson McKinzie added 13 points and a key free throw with 36 seconds left to help seal the victory.
How It Happened
Friends jumped out to a 10-point lead midway through the first quarter, but Bethel clawed back with a strong effort from its bench, led by Farah Shehab, who chipped in five points early. By halftime, the Threshers trailed 38-36.
In the third quarter, Bethel's defense clamped down, forcing 18 turnovers in the game. Carley Robb's timely three-pointers and Richards' steady play helped the Threshers take a narrow lead into the final frame.
The fourth quarter was a battle of wills, with Friends tying the game at 65-65 on a basket by Abigail Barr with 3:35 left. McKinzie responded with a go-ahead layup, and Bethel held the Falcons scoreless in the final seconds to preserve the win.
