NORTH NEWTON, Kan. (March 12th)—The Bethel College flag football team faced a formidable challenge on Wednesday night, taking on multi-time national champion Ottawa University, ultimately falling 54-0 at Thresher Stadium.
How It Happened
Ottawa wasted no time showcasing why they are one of the top teams in the country, jumping out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter, fueled by quick-strike touchdown drives and a defensive safety. The Braves extended their lead to 29-0 at halftime, making it difficult for Bethel to gain momentum.
Despite the tough matchup, Bethel showed flashes of promise, particularly on the defensive side. Xavia Mann recorded an interception in the first half, giving the Threshers an opportunity to shift the momentum. Kathryn Schmidt added three solo tackles, helping slow down Ottawa's powerful attack.
Offensively, Kyndall Longman led Bethel's passing game, completing 13-of-32 passes for 48 yards, while Tatiana McCollum led the ground attack with 36 rushing yards on five carries. Nevaeh Gonzales also stepped up, finishing with 15 passing yards and 14 rushing yards, contributing in multiple areas.
The Threshers' best scoring opportunity came in the second quarter, when Longman connected with Nevaeh Gonzales for a 14-yard pass to push Bethel into Ottawa territory. However, the drive was cut short by a Braves' interception in the red zone.
In the second half, Ottawa continued to apply pressure, adding touchdowns in each quarter. Despite the lopsided score, Bethel fought hard defensively, with Regina Mendoza recording two sacks for a loss of 14 yards to disrupt the Braves' offensive rhythm.
