Hall of Fame Coach Rocky Lamar Retires After Two Seasons Leading Bethel Women’s Basketball

North Newton, Kan. - When Bethel College needed a women's basketball coach in 2023, Hall of Famer Rocky Lamar stepped up. Now, after two impactful seasons, he's retiring once again—this time from the Thresher bench.

One of the most decorated coaches in NAIA history, Lamar built a legendary career at MidAmerica Nazarene University. Over 36 seasons, he guided the Pioneers to 803 wins, 13 conference titles, 19 national tournament appearances, and the 2007 NAIA National Championship. His legacy includes 37 All-America selections and 23 seasons with at least 20 wins. At the time of his retirement from MNU in 2022, he was the winningest active coach in the NAIA.

"Coach Lamar stepped in last year and agreed to serve one year as interim coach," said Bethel AD Tim Swartzendruber. "We were fortunate and thankful he did two seasons for us. Not only is he a Hall of Fame Coach, he is a great person and tremendous mentor for our student-athletes. We truly appreciate the time and effort Coach gave to Bethel College."

Lamar led Bethel to a 25-33 overall record, including a fourth-place KCAC finish and a home playoff game in year two. Though his time in North Newton was brief, his legacy—grounded in leadership, faith, and mentorship—made a lasting impact.
