Lindsborg, Kan. - The Bethel College women's tennis team wrapped up another outstanding season Friday night, coming just short in a tightly contested KCAC semifinal, falling 4-3 to Oklahoma Wesleyan. The Threshers finished the year with an impressive 16-5 overall record and 11-1 mark in regular season conference play, once again establishing themselves among the KCAC's elite programs under Gabe Johnson.
Friday's semifinal match was a back-and-forth battle from the start. Bethel dropped two of three doubles matches, with the pairing of Kate Rowland and Jireh Gonzalez picking up a win at No. 3 doubles to give the Threshers momentum heading into singles play.
In singles, senior Daniela Herrera delivered yet another dominant performance at the top spot, taking down her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Patty Huerta and Jireh Gonzalez also earned convincing straight-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, to keep Bethel in contention.
However, Oklahoma Wesleyan was able to edge out close matches at No. 2, 3, and 4 singles to secure the narrow 4-3 team victory and punch their ticket to the KCAC finals.
Although the season ended just shy of a championship appearance, it was another year to remember for the Threshers, who consistently showcased their depth, determination, and elite talent throughout the campaign.
The match also marked the end of two incredible Bethel careers.
Daniela Herrera closes her time as one of the most decorated players in Thresher history. A two-time KCAC Player of the Year — including a unanimous selection this season — Herrera went undefeated in singles this year and was a force in every match she played. Her dominance at the top of the lineup helped push Bethel to new heights and earned her recognition as one of the top players in the country at the NAIA level.
Jenna Mahoney also concluded her Bethel career Friday night. A consistent presence since her freshman season, Mahoney made remarkable strides each year, growing into a key contributor whose development helped power the Threshers' sustained success.
As the Threshers look ahead to next season, they will build on the strong foundation laid by this year's team.
