NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Bethel College men's tennis faced a tough test Monday afternoon as the Threshers hosted a nationally ranked William Woods squad. The Owls, ranked No. 20 in the ITA rankings and No. 18 in the NAIA, came away with a 7–0 victory over Bethel.
William Woods set the tone early in doubles play, taking two of the three matches to claim the doubles point. The Bethel duo of Jonah Bergeron and Adam Tomka delivered the Threshers' lone doubles win with a 6–3 victory at No. 3 doubles, but the Owls secured the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Singles play featured several tightly contested matches despite the final scoreline.
At No. 1 singles, Jorge Batista pushed Duarte Melo to three sets before falling 6–3, 3–6, 7–5 in one of the most competitive matches of the day. At No. 6 singles, Adam Tomka battled Jesper Seger in another three-set match, splitting the first two sets before dropping the deciding set 6–4.
Billy Haoda also forced a long battle at No. 3 singles, pushing Noah Burton through four sets before Burton secured the win. William Woods ultimately swept the singles matches to complete the 7–0 result.
Bethel will look to bounce back quickly as the Threshers travel to Kansas Wesleyan on Thursday for a 1:00 PM match.
