Jayson Artaz is in his 8th year as head coach of the Bethel men's basketball program, hired to the post in May of 2018. Including the 2022-23 season, Artaz has led the Threshers to four straight 20-win seasons while guiding the team to a regular season conference championship in 2020-21. The 106 wins Bethel amassed in Artaz’s first five years were more than the previous eight seasons combined.
In 2024-25, Bethel finished tied for 3rd in the KCAC and made an incredible run to the KCAC Championship game, including a double-overtime home win over Ottawa in the quarterfinals and a semifinal road victory over eventual national runner-up Oklahoma Wesleyan. The Threshers fell in the championship game at Saint Mary. They received an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament, where they lost by three in the first round to Concordia (Neb.). Bethel finished the season 22-10. On January 15, Bethel defeated Tabor on the road, and Artaz became the winningest coach in program history.
In the 2023-24 season, Bethel finished 8th in the conference with a record of 17-13, falling in the first round to eventual tournament champion Oklahoma Wesleyan.
In 2022-23, Bethel finished third in the KCAC regular season and reached the KCAC tournament final, falling to Southwestern. In the national tournament, they were eliminated in the opening round by Jamestown, a team that featured the NAIA National Player of the Year and advanced to the Round of 16.
In 2021-22, the Threshers finished second in the KCAC regular season behind Oklahoma Wesleyan and again fell in the KCAC tournament final to OKWU. Bethel advanced to its second straight NAIA Round of 16 after defeating Briar Cliff and Saint Francis in the opening rounds.
In 2020-21, the Threshers won both the KCAC regular season and postseason championships—the latter for the first time in school history—while leading the conference in five team categories: scoring defense per game, scoring margin, blocks, steals, and net efficiency. In the national tournament, Bethel reached the Round of 16 for the first time in school history with wins over Voorhees College and Northwestern.
In 2019-20, Bethel posted its best season in 20 years with a 20-12 record and advanced to the KCAC tournament semifinals for the first time since 2005. The team featured the KCAC Defensive Player of the Year and two All-Conference selections.
In 2018-19, Artaz’s first year, Bethel finished 17-13, marking the program’s first winning season since 2004. The Threshers improved their win total by 10 games from the previous season and had the KCAC Freshman of the Year along with two All-Conference selections.
Coach Artaz graduated from Bethel College in 2005 with a degree in elementary education. As a player, Jayson was a 2nd Team All-Conference player in 2005 and a key contributor on the 2003 conference championship team and national tournament qualifier. He is still the program's single-season three-point holder, draining 96 total in 2004-05. He and his wife Lauren ('07 BC graduate) reside in Newton with their children Payton and Landon.
