James Cottage

James Cottage is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Bethel men's soccer program.

A native of Thrapston, England, Cottage moved to the US in 2007 and attended the University of Science and Arts in Chickasha, Oklahoma. After his sophomore year, he transferred to Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Oklahoma.

Captaining the Eagles in 2009, Cottage became an ACCA All American Midfielder & NCCAA 2nd team All American on a 16-5 season that SCU went on to be ACCA National Champions and NCCAA Southwest Regional Champions.

In 2010, Cottage helped lead the Eagles as captain again, to a 20-3 season his senior year, scoring 8 goals and adding 3 assists. He was named MCAC All Conference Midfielder.

Cottage graduated from Southwestern Christian University with a degree in sport management, and immediately took a position as an assistant soccer coach at SCU.

The 2012 season came to a close in the conference tournament final with a 2-0 loss to Bellevue. In 2013 the Eagles lost in the regional tournament of the NCCAA to SAGU and 2013 in the regional final loss to MACU.

The 2014 season ended at the NCCAA tournament 3-2 to Lee University.

Cottage became head coach for the men's soccer program at SCU shortly after the 2014 season, serving for two seasons.

In the 2015 season, the Eagles lost in the Sooner Athletic Conference Final to Cottage’s previous school USAO 3-1. The season ended in the NCCAA National Semi Final to eventual winners Southern Wesleyan University. The Eagles finished the season with a record of 16-10.
After falling to eventual NAIA National Champions Wayland Baptist on penalties in the Sooner Athletic Conference Semi-Final in 2016, the Eagles went on to win the National Christian College Athletic Association national tournament and Cottage was named NCCAA Coach of the Year. Four players placed on the All-Tournament Team with Chad Dennis becoming the Player of the Tournament and NCCAA National Player of the Year. The eagles won 1-0 in overtime and finished the season 15-5-5.

In 2017, Cottage moved to the Division II program at California State University, Monterey Bay, where he served for one season before returning to Oklahoma, where he was a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Oklahoma women's soccer under Matt Potter.

Cottage also has 11 years of experience coaching high school and club soccer. Highlights at youth level include winning the 2012 Oklahoma High School State Cup with Northwest Classen boys, losing in the 2017 State Cup Semi-Finals with Bishop McGuinness girls and coaching in the US DA with the Breakers FC u17 boys and tying eventual National Champions 3-3 and beating LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers.

Cottage received a Masters Degree in Sport Administration in 2018 from East Central University.
