Threshers 37-31 Win Over #15 Southwestern Sealed by Trey Palmer Interception

WINFIELD, Kan. - In a match-up of top 25 teams, the #16 Bethel Threshers traveled to take on the #15 Southwestern Moundbuilders. This contest would need two overtime periods for a decision to be made. The Threshers would come away with a 37-31 victory after Trey Palmer intercepted a Mounbuilder pass in the end zone.

The Moundbuilders opened up the contest with a 79-yard touchdown drive to take an early 7-0 lead. Bethel answered right back with an 83-yard drive of their own capped off DJ Ciers 41-yard touchdown run. Southwestern scored on the ensuing possession to take a 14-7. Both teams punted on their remaining first-half possessions with the exception of one Bethel drive that ended in a lost fumble.

The Threshers came out of the locker room ready to play. Bethel scored on all three of their third-quarter possessions. A Chantz Scurry 43-yard touchdown run, Tanner Galliart 11-yard touchdown run, and a Logan DeMond field goal that put the Threshers up 24-14 over the Moundbuilders heading into the final quarter of regulation.

The fourth quarter was all Moundbuilders as they would put 10 points on the board to tie the contest including a score with under one minute left to send the game into overtime.

Bethel won the overtime coin toss and selected to be on defense first. Southwestern needed just two plays to get into the end zone putting the pressure on the Threshers. On the third play of the Bethel possession, Ciers found Mario Quintero who was wide open on a wheel route. Quintero was able to walk into the end zone and force a second overtime period.

In the second overtime period, the Threshers were up first. Bethel got into the end zone on the first play as Camryn Harrison took the pitch and then proceeded to find Galliart in the end zone for a touchdown. The Threshers were forced to go for two following the touchdown due to overtime rules. Their attempt came up just short as Harrison was shoved out of bounds at the 1-yard line.

The Moundbuilders would start their possession off with a 2-yard rush. Southwestern took a shot at the end zone on their ensuing play trying to challenge Trey Palmer. Palmer answered the call with a diving interception

DJ Ciers would go 3 for 6 for 31-yards and a touchdown through the air while racking up 73 rushings yards and a touchdown on the ground. Chantz Scurry racked up a game-high 109 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. Camryn Harrison went 1 for 1 through the air for 25 yards and a touchdown, adding in 83-yards on 10 rushing attempts.

John Henson led the Thresher defense with 7 tackles, including 1 sack. Dominique Copeland and Trey Palmer both intercepted passes. Copeland's leading to a Thresher touchdown and Palmer's sealing the win.

Bethel will be back in action on Saturday, October 16th as they host #22 Avila inside Thresher Stadium with kick-off set for 1:00 PM.
