KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Bethel Women's Soccer team took on the Avila Eagles in the second half of the non-traditional doubleheader. The Threshers would use two second half goals to force an overtime. Neither team would score in the extra time as the contest would end in a 2-2 tie.
The Eagles would jump out to an early 1-0 lead with an 11th minute goal. Avila would keep the pressure on the Thresher defense and slow the Bethel attck down in the first half.
Nine minutes into the closing period, the Eagles would extend their lead to 2-0.
The Threshers would cut into the Eagle lead in the 5th minute when
Grace Anderson would score her third goal of the year. Katy Pone would cross a ball from the left side of the box to Anderson in the middle as she would beat the keeper with her left foot to make the score 2-1 Avila.
Claire Hedlund would get a chance one-on-one with the goalkeeper when the Eagle keeper would slide and take down Hedlund missing the ball. The referees would confer before giving the Avila keeper a card awarding the Threshers a penalty kick as the foul occurred in the box.
Taylor Dashney would take the PK and beat the keeper with her left foot in the upper left corner.
Neither team would score in the remaining seven minutes and change of regulation. Avila would take 11 of their 29 shots in the two overtime periods, while Bethel would not get a single shot in the two extra times.
Despite outshooting Bethel 29 to 12, Avila would only record two more shots on goal than the Threshers.
Bethel will be back in action on Saturday, September 25th as they return home to host Bethany College at 5:00 PM.
