Thresher Volleyball rolls by Spires in three set sweep

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - The Bethel College Volleyball team hosted the Saint Mary Spires for a KCAC Conference match inside Thresher Gym. The Threshers blew the Spires out 25-14 in the opening set before winning a tightly contested 26-24 set two and a 25-19 set three for their second straight sweep. This win gave Bethel their second win over USM since 2014.

The Threshers started the contest on a roll with Maddie Chupp serving the first 11 points. Bethel used four kills, three blocks, three Spire errors and a service ace from Chupp to jump out to an 11-0 lead. Following a USM timeout, the Spires rattled off five points to make the contest 12-6. The Threshers responded with five straight of their own to balloon their lead back to 11. Both teams then traded small runs the rest of the match with BC winning 25-14 in the most fitting way possible a Chupp service ace. Harlie Hunton hit .600 in the set going 3/5 and Kylah Carter was 1.000 going 2/2.

The second set was a much tighter battle between the two conference foes. The Spires used a 4-0 run to build up an early 5-3 lead. USM tried multiple times to pull away early on in the set, but BC never let it get too far away. Trailing 14-13, the Threshers turned up the pressure rattling off four straight points capped off with a Julie Wilhite ace to take the lead. Both teams traded points until comig to a 24-24 tie. This is where the Threshers slammed the door as Wilhite recorded a kill and the Spires picked up their 11th error of the set. Four Threshers hit over .400 in the set led by Julie Wilhite at .500.

In the third set neither team was able to pull away in the early parts as Bethel slowly built up a five point lead 13-8. The Threshers kept the lead the rest of the contest holding the Spires at bay never letting the contest get any closer than four points and leading by as much as nine. Down 20-11 the Spires strung together four straight points to make the Threshers sweat a little. Following a BC timeout, Bethel kicked it back in gear to score five of the final nine points of the contest. Mia Loganbill took it to the Spires in the third set as she hit .857 after going 6 for 7 without committing an error.

The Threshers turned in 41 kills in the win led by Mia Loganbill with 14. Jordan Boone recorded 5 blocks in the win while Maddie Chupp had 3 service aces. Mia Roman recorded 21 assists while Katey Wilhelm turned in 22 digs.

Bethel will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 22nd as they host McPherson College at 7:00 PM for Senior Night.
