Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Four second half goals doom Men's Soccer on Senior Night

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - The Bethel College Men's Soccer team took on the Saint Mary Spires after celebrating their seniors that will be leaving the program prior to the contest. After entering the intermission in a nill-nill tie, the Spires exploded for four goals in the second half.

Prior to kick off and following the conclusion of the women's game, the team recognized the seven seniors that will be leaving the BC men's soccer program at the end of the season. Those seven seniors are: Osvaldo Alvarez, Vicente Trejo, Kevin Hampton, Brian Firebaugh, Matheus Tavares, Arthur Mahrer and Sebastian Formento.

In the opening 45 minutes both teams had ample opportunities to break the tie as the Spires took eight shots and the Threshers seven. However, neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities as they entered the break 0-0.

Neither team was able to get on the board until the 63rd minute when the Spires found themselves with an opportunity they were finally able to capitalize on.

The next USM goal came following a controversial call on the Thresher keeper, Colton Rothwell, as he was given a yellow card for challenging a Spire attacker in the box. The referee awarded a penalty kick to the visitors. Their penalty taker was able to beat Rothwell extending their lead.

The Spires scored their third goal just two minutes later as they momentum had completely switched in the contest.

USM added insult to injury for the Threshers in the 83rd minute as they scored their fourth goal of the final 45 minutes of the contest.

The Threshers were outshot in the loss 16(10) to 11(7).

Bethel will be back in action on Saturday, October 29th as they will attempt to keep their KCAC playoff hopes alive when they take on the York Panthers with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 PM.
