Women's Basketball drops season opener to Northwestern

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - The Bethel College Women's Basketball team opened up their 2022-23 campaign as they hosted the Northwestern College Raiders. Bethel was outscored 22-5 in the second quarter as the Raiders ran away with the 99-54 victory. 

Both teams started the contest trying to get their legs under them them in the opening quarter of their first game of the season. Bethel was able to keep it close early by shooting over 42% from three point range in a period that Northwestern shot over 61%. Josie Stupey led the Threshers in the first half with 5 points. 

The second quarter saw the issue that Bethel dealt with all season last year rear its head as they shot just 14% from the field as Northwestern outscored them 22-5. In a quarter that the Raiders had their worst shooting, Bethel was unable to take advantage as Northwestern took the 43-22 halftime lead.

Bethel was unable to slow down the Northwestern offense as they quickly built up their largest lead of the contest, 35 points, early on in the opening frame of the second half. The Threshers closed out the quarter scoring the final four points as the two teams took a 67-36 score into the final ten minutes of play. 

Both teams turned in their highest scoring quarters in the final frame with Bethel being outscored 32-18. Freshman Caryn Yoder came alive in the fourth quarter scoring seven of her team high 10 points. 

Bethel shot just over 28% from the floor in the loss, while Northwestern shot a tick over 51%. The Threshers shot 25% from three while the Raiders shot nearly 43%. Bethel was led in scoring by Caryn Yoder in her collegiate debut with 10. Lena Driscoll led the Threshers in rebounding pulling in 7 boards in the loss.

Bethel will be back in action as they travel to California for a three game road trip as they take on Simpson and Cal State Maritime before an exhibition against NCAA DI UC Davis. The Threshers will tip with the Redhawks of Simpson on Friday, Nov. 4th at 9:00 PM CT.
