REDDING, Calif. - The Bethel College Women's Basketball team took to the air for their choice of travel this week. The Threshers flew to California for a matchup with Head Coach
Derrick Pringle Jr.'s former team, the Simpson Red Hawks, before taking on California State Maritime and the University of California at Davis.
Both teams struggled scoring the ball in the opening minutes of the contest as Simpson led 7-2 halfway through the opening ten minutes. Each team scored four points in the final two minutes as the Red Hawks took the 13-9 lead into the second quarter.
Jaycee Freshour led all scorers with four points on 2 of 4 shooting to open the contest.
The second quarter saw the Red Hawks stretch their lead to as much as seven halfway through the quarter as they led 24-17. Bethel was able to cut into the Simpson lead getting it down to just three points with back to back
Jasmine Peete baskets. The Red Hawks scored seven straight points to open up their largest lead of the contest, ten, 30-23. The Threshers were able to keep the lead to the lowest double-digit heading into the half as Simpson led 35-25. Peete and
Parker Schroeder had 7 points a piece in the quarter as the duo combined for 14 of the Threshers 17 points in the quarter.
Bethel had their lowest scoring quarter of the contest coming out of the intermission as they were outscored by Simpson 17-7. After a
Caryn Yoder three to start the scoring for the third set of ten minutes, the Red Hawks scored ten unanswered to extend their lead to 17 points, 45-28. Bethel was unable to keep their opponent off of the charity strip in the quarter as they went 10 for 12 while ballooning their lead to 20 by the end of the quarter.Â
The fourth quarter was the only quarter where the Threshers outscored the Red Hawks. Bethel nearly doubled their score in the fourth quarter as they put up 22 points on 8 of 18 shooting. The major difference for BC was the three point shooting as they knocked down 3 of their 6 three point attempts. With their backs up against the wall, Bethel turned up the pressure putting on a full court press speeding up the Red Hawks. The Threshers forced over a third of Simpson's turnovers in the final ten minutes as they tried to claw their way back into the contest. Bethel was able to get the lead down to 11 points when Schroeder knocked down a floater, but that was as close as the Red Hawks would let it get as they took the 69-54 victory.
Parker Schroeder led the Threshers in scoring and rebounding with 12 points and 5 boards.Â
The Threshers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the California State Maritime Keelhaulers at 3:00 PM CT, 1:00 PM PT.
