Softball splits with Sterling after picking up 6-5 victory in game one

STERLING, Kan. - The Bethel College Softball team kept their road trip alive as they traveled East to Sterling College for KCAC play. After taking game one 6-5 with late heroics, the Threshers were unable to avoid the big inning in the second game as they fell 9-1 in 5 innings.

GAME 1 W, 6-5

After one inning of play, the Warriors held an early 2-0 advantage over the Threshers. Sterling was able to add to their lead in the bottom of the third inning stretching it to 3-0. Bethel answered back in the top of the fourth when Lauren Terry reached on an error that would score Claire Broxterman and Marissa Harrison. With the Threshers trailing 4-3, the Warriors pushed their lead back to two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Bethel once again answered the SC score with two runs of their own to tie the contest.  Olivia Nava hit an RBI single to left field and Lauren Hurd grounded out for an RBI. The Warriors pushed another run across in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead back 5-4. Once again, the Threshers were able to respond with two runs in the ensuing half inning. Morgan Marsh scored on an obstruction call after Catherine Carter reached on an error by the first baseman. Abigail Walker, pinch running for Carter, scored on an obstruction call as well after Broxterman reached on an error by the second baseman to give BC a 6-5 lead. The Threshers sat the Warriors down in order in the 7th inning to secure the 6-5 victory.

Lauren Hurd - 3/4, RBI
Marissa Harrison - 3/4, R
Rachel Duer (W) - 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO

GAME 2 L, 9-1 (5 inn.)

Game two was a much different story, the Threshers started the scoring off with a run in the top of the first as Dakota Piovesan scored on a wild pitch. This time, it was the Warriors who were able to respond when trailing as their clean up hitter smacked a three-run homerun in the bottom half of the first. The Threshers were kept off the base paths for the majority of the rest of the contest as the Warriors walked just two batters and didn't give up a hit after the first inning. After over an hour in a lightning delay following the top half of the fourth inning, Sterling was able to put up four runs in their half of the fourth inning and two more in the fifth inning to induce the run rule and finish the contest 9-1.

Dakota Piovesan - 1/3, R
Lauren Hurd - 0/1, 2 BB

The Threshers will be back in action as they host the Friends Falcons at Allen Wedel Field on Saturday, April 2 with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1 PM.
