Volleyball splits triangular with a loss to Evangel and a victory over Haskell

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. - The Bethel College Volleyball team hosted a triangular with Evangel University and Haskell Indian Nations University just one day after picking up their first KCAC victory of the season. The Threshers fell 3-0 to the Evangel Valor before picking up a 3-0 victory over the Haskell Fighting Indians.
 
3-0 vs Evangel (25-19, 25-19, 25-20)
 
The Threshers started off the contest scoring the first two points on Valor errors. Evangel responded with the next four points. After this, the two teams traded points until the Valor took control of the match at the 11-10 mark. Evangel never trailed the rest of the set as they went on for a 25-19 win.
 
The second set was nearly identical to the first with BC taking the very early lead and EU responding before eventually taking control in the middle of the set. The second set ended with a 25-19 score in favor of Evangel.
 
The Valor took the early lead in the third set, but Bethel scored four straight after great serving from Brooke Russell. The Threshers used another 4-0 run later in the set to take a 13-12 advantage that included a kill from Kylah Carter and an ace from Lauren McCreary. Both teams traded points back and forth until the 20-19 mark. The Valor closed out the match scoring five of the final six points to complete the 3-0 victory.
 
Mia Loganbill led the Threshers in kills with 9. Mia Roman turned in 18 assists in the loss. Katey Wilhelm led the Thresher defense with 10 digs.
 
3-2 vs Haskell (25-17, 21-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-1)
 
Haskell controlled the pace early on in the opening set before the Threshers strung together seven straight points to take a 12-10 advantage. After the Fighting Indians broke the Threshers' run, Bethel closed out the set on a 13-6 run to take the opening frame 25-17 with five players recording kills. 
 
The second set saw Bethel hit .000 and turned in eight errors as they dropped the set 25-21 to Haskell. In the set, the Fighting Indians recorded 5 aces on Bethel's defense. 
 
Both teams traded points to open up the third set until things were tied 6-6. At this point, Bethel took complete control of the contest outscoring Haskell 19-8 thanks to 10 errors by the Fighting Indians. 
 
To open the fourth set, neither team led by more than three points until BC was successful in stretching an 18-12 lead. Haskell responded with six unanswered points, four coming from errors by the Threshers. Both teams again traded points until becoming tied 23-23 when the Fighting Indians scored the final two points taking the set 25-23 with back-to-back kills. 
 
In the fifth and decisive set, Bethel opened up scoring eight of the first nine points to force the switch. The Threshers scored the next 7 points to finish out the set 15-1. 
 
Bethel was led in kills by Mia Loganbill with 12. Kylah Carter added in 13 kills of her own. Mia Roman recorded 25 assists in the five-set victory.  Katey Wilhelm turned in 25 digs to lead the Bethel defense.
 
The Threshers will be back in action on Wednesday, September 28th as they host York University for another KCAC Conference matchup with first serve slated for 6:00 PM.
