Sioux City. IA — October 25, 2024

In their season opener, the Bethel College men's basketball team defeated Briar Cliff 89-72. The Threshers used a combination of key runs, particularly in the second half, to secure the win.

First Half: Back-and-Forth Battle

The first half was highly competitive, with both teams trading leads. Bethel started with a quick bucket from Albert Diarra, setting the tone. Nick Bonner's shooting kept the Threshers in the game, contributing 9 points in the first half. Harper Jonas also came through with timely buckets to help Bethel maintain pace.

With the teams tied at multiple points, Bethel managed to pull ahead just before halftime, thanks to a late push led by Carmelo Yakubu and Eli Wiseman. Yakubu scored with 5 seconds to play to give Bethel a 40-39 halftime lead.

Second Half: Threshers Take Control

Bethel came out strong after the break, quickly establishing a lead with an 8-0 run fueled by Bonner and Diarra. Bonner was unstoppable inside, finishing with 21 points overall and multiple key baskets early in the second half. Jonas's shooting stretched Briar Cliff's defense, allowing Bethel to capitalize with scoring runs.

As the half progressed, Yakubu and Wiseman contributed to an impressive 15-5 run that extended the Threshers' lead. Wiseman hit two back-to-back threes during the run, pushing Bethel's lead to double digits. Bethel's defense also played a significant role, holding Briar Cliff to 33 points in the second half and forcing several turnovers. Yakubu finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds, while Diarra added 12 points and 3 assists.

With this win, Bethel begins their season on a high note. They will look to build on this strong performance in their upcoming games in their home opener against Barclay at 12:30PM for Elementary School day.
