Men's Basketball Dominates Barclay on Elementary School Day, 103-56

North Newton, Kan. — October 29, 2024

The Bethel College men's basketball team opened their season in style with a commanding 103-56 victory over Barclay College. Playing in front of a lively crowd of 750 second- to fourth-graders for Elementary School Day, Bethel took control early. Bethel Athletics parterned with the Newton School District for the event today. 

First Half: Bethel's Offense Takes Charge

The atmosphere was electric, with the young crowd bringing impressive energy that Bethel matched on the court. In the opening five minutes, Bethel jumped to a 10-3 lead, fueled by early baskets from Carmelo Yakubu and Albert Diarra. Nick Bonner then sparked a 15-4 run midway through the half, scoring inside and connecting from beyond the arc. Eli Wiseman also contributed to the run with a hree-pointer, helping Bethel close the half with a commanding 47-20 lead. The Threshers shot 54% from the field in the first half. 

Second Half: Threshers' Depth Seals the Win

Bethel continued their offensive dominance in the second half, extending their lead with a 10-0 run led by Yakubu and Bonner. Albert Diarra remained efficient, finishing with 11 points and 6 rebounds, while Bethel's bench added 49 points, underscoring the team's depth. Drew Rodriguez and Carter Reid knocked down threes, and Christion Whitaker contributed valuable minutes, pulling down 5 rebounds and adding 6 points. Bethel's defensive pressure forced Barclay into 18 turnovers, converting many into fast-break opportunities. The Threshers closed out the game with consecutive baskets from Lucas Stewart and Rodriguez, capping off a dominant performance.


Next up for Bethel

They will travel to Salina on Friday and Saturday to take on Wayland Baptist and Northern New Mexico in the Kansas Wesleyan Classic. Both games at 4pm.
