Leavenworth, Kan. - November 16th
Despite a standout performance from Carmelo Yakubu, who recorded a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds, the Bethel College Men's Basketball team fell 84-72 to Saint Mary in their conference opener.
First Half: Saint Mary Builds Momentum
The game opened with a competitive exchange of baskets, with Bethel keeping pace behind early contributions from Yakubu and Harper Jonas. However, Saint Mary found their rhythm midway through the half, capitalizing on Bethel turnovers to establish a 39-30 lead at the break. The Threshers' defense worked hard to limit damage, but Saint Mary's three-point shooting proved difficult to counter.
Second Half: Bethel Fights to Stay Close
Bethel came out strong in the second half, led by Yakubu's dominant play in the paint and Jonas' sharp shooting from beyond the arc. Yakubu scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half. Bethel cut the deficit to single digits multiple times, but Saint Mary's efficient 56% shooting in the half and ability to convert turnovers into points kept them in control. A late scoring push by the opponent sealed the game.
The Threshers will look to bounce back in their next game on Wednesday night at home against Southwestern College.
