NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — The Bethel College men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 91–85 overtime decision to No. 14 Friends University on Wednesday night inside Thresher Gym. Despite the loss, Bethel remains firmly in the upper tier of the conference at 15–4 overall and 10–3 in KCAC play, sitting in a three-way tie for 2nd place alongside Friends and McPherson.
The matchup lived up to its billing, featuring two nationally recognized teams trading momentum throughout the night. Friends jumped out early and carried a 45–32 lead at halftime, but Bethel responded with an inspired second-half effort, outscoring the Falcons 47–34 after the break to force overtime. Bethel had a chance to take the lead in regulation with 4.4 seconds to go at the free throw line down 1, but Bethel couldn't cash in on both free throws to send it to OT. Friends hit some tough, timely buckets to stretch out the lead and win in OT.
Trenton Patterson led Bethel with 23 points, providing consistent scoring and energy throughout the night. Rustan Griffen added 16 points, while Carmelo Yakubu chipped in 13 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Dominick Harris finished with 12 points and played a key role defensively as Bethel battled back into the game.
Even in defeat, Bethel's effort keeps them squarely in the KCAC title conversation as the second half of conference play continues.
