Softball Splits with Avila on Senior Day, Sandoval Caps Comeback with Walk-Off Single

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Bethel College Softball split its Senior Day doubleheader with Avila on Saturday at Wedel Field, using a dramatic late-game rally to take Game 1 before falling in the nightcap. With the split, the Threshers move to 12-18 overall and 8-12 in KCAC play, now sitting just one game behind Saint Mary for the final conference tournament spot.

Prior to first pitch of the 2nd game, Bethel honored seniors Sadie Jensen, Madison Gonzalez, and Emma Killingsworth for their contributions to the program.

Game 1: Bethel 5, Avila 4

Bethel saved its best for last in the opener, exploding for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off against Avila.

Trailing 4-0 entering the final frame, the Threshers put together one of their most complete innings of the season. After loading the bases, Alohi Mundon delivered the biggest swing of the game with a bases-clearing triple to cut the deficit to one. Moments later, Bethel continued to apply pressure at the plate, tying the game before Kailey "Kiki" Sandoval came through with the walk-off hit to complete the comeback victory.

In the circle, senior Emma Killingsworth went the distance, earning the win while scattering 10 hits and allowing just three earned runs across seven innings.

Game 2: Avila 9, Bethel 2

Avila responded in the second game, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back in a 9-2 win.

The Eagles plated four runs in the opening inning and added insurance throughout the game to maintain control. Bethel showed flashes offensively, with Kenzi Young recording two hits and Kiyana Cash driving in a run, but the Threshers were unable to string together enough offense to close the gap.

Bethel's pitching staff saw multiple arms in the circle, with Katelynn Quidato and Mya Morris providing relief efforts after the early deficit.

Up Next

The Threshers will look to carry the momentum from their Game 1 comeback into next week as they travel to Oklahoma Wesleyan on Thursday.
