Guy Sets School Record with 98-Yard Kickoff Return in Threshers Season Opening Defeat

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Bethel suffered a 48-14 defeat to #22 Southwestern on Saturday night. The Threshers managed to score twice, including a remarkable 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jonathan Guy, which set a new school record.

Brady Norman completed 28 of 39 passes for 203 yards, adding a rushing touchdown on six carries. Joshua Santos led the defense with 11 total tackles. Josiah Buller made a significant contribution with 10 receptions totaling 83 yards. Jonathan Guy's record-setting 98-yard kickoff return was his sole score of the game.

Bethel showcased a balanced offensive attack in the first quarter, highlighted by Norman's efficient passing. Norman completed passes of 13 and 14 yards, contributing to a total of 38 yards on their third drive. However, Southwestern's defense capitalized on a key turnover when Jackson Meadows intercepted a pass at the 2-yard line, halting a promising Threshers drive. Despite the interception, Bethel managed to hold Southwestern scoreless, with the score tied 0-0 at the end of the quarter.

Southwestern outscored the Threshers 12-0 in the second quarter, with Jamie Odom's 7-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Chambers and Christian Steward's 2-yard run to the end zone leading the charge. The Threshers managed to limit Southwestern's scoring opportunities with a key fumble recovery at the goal line, but they struggled to capitalize offensively. Norman's passing game was hindered, completing several short gains but failing to contribute to the scoreboard. At halftime, Southwestern led 12-0.

Southwestern capitalized on turnovers and explosive plays during the third quarter. After a Threshers interception by Jackson Meadows at the Southwestern 15-yard line, Christian Steward's 45-yard rushing touchdown at 10:20 marked the start of a scoring surge. The Threshers responded with Guy's record-breaking 98-yard kickoff return touchdown at 6:00, but Southwestern continued to extend its lead with additional touchdowns by Caleb Phillips and Zamir Hall. Southwestern closed the quarter leading 41-7.

Bethel capitalized on a series of Southwestern penalties in the fourth quarter, with two pass interference calls helping them move deep into opponent territory. Norman's three-yard touchdown rush at 1:56, followed by Raymond Escobedo's successful extra point, highlighted the effective drive. Despite Bethel's efforts, Southwestern maintained its lead, closing the game with a 48-14 result.

Looking ahead, Bethel will face McPherson on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. in McPherson, Kan.
