KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Bethel College softball team earned their first victories of the year as they swept the Kansas Christian Falcons 9-1 and 17-13.
Madelaine Debs continued to provide a spark for the Threshers in the circle as she threw 5 innings in game one giving up just two hits and a run while striking out ten batters.
Bethel struck first in the top of the opening frame as
Ella Caudill and
Claire Broxterman both scored via Falcon errors.
The Threshers struck for seven more runs in the third inning as they opened up the 9-1 lead.
Game two saw the Falcons take the early lead as they smacked two-run and three-run homeruns in the opening frame.
Bethel answered with a run of their own in the top of the second as
Kelsie Kreutzer drove in
Emily Demartino with an RBI single.
After KCC got a run back in the bottom half of the second, Bethel scored another run in the third with a
Cassie Albin RBI double.
Bethel put up their first zero defensively in the third as they exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning. Kreutzer and Katherine Meiries hit back-to-back homeruns,
Ashlyn Rushing scored on an error,
Meehlia Mendiola hit a two-run homerun and Demartino and Ashley Bodine drove in runs.
With the Threshers leading 11-6, the Falcons scored six runs in the fourth to take the lead right back.
Trailing by a run, BC scored three runs in the fifth and three in the six to open their lead back up to five. KCC was able to scratch one more run across in the bottom of the sixth before Debs shut the door with a strikeout.
Debs threw 3.2 innings in game two giving up three hits and a run while striking out eight more Falcons. She finished the doubleheader going 3 for 4 at the plate with 4 RBI and a three-run homerun.
The Threshers racked up 18 hits in game two led by Mendiola and Bodine with 3 each as
Anniston Oylear, Kreutzer, Meiries and Rushing each finished with a pair of hits.
Bethel will be back in action on Friday at 10 am as they open up the Hosea Bell Red Dirt Classic in Oklahoma City, Okla. against the Langston Lions before taking on Oklahoma Panhandle State at 12:30 PM.
