Bethel Football Earns 2nd and T-3rd in Media and Coaches Preseason Polls

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — 2025 Season Outlook
Media Day Interview
Media: 2nd Coaches: T-3rd Head Coach: Josh Lawson

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Bethel College football enters the 2025 season with high expectations, earning a second-place selection in the media poll and a tie for third in the coaches poll in the KCAC's annual Dr. Ted Kessinger Preseason Division Polls.

The recognition comes as the Threshers prepare for their first season under Head Coach Josh Lawson, who joined Bethel from Calvin University, where he served as defensive coordinator. Speaking at KCAC Football Media Day, Lawson expressed excitement about the opportunity to lead the program.

"I've been waiting on this opportunity for 20-something years," Lawson said. "Getting the chance to be a head coach at a place like Bethel has been wonderful. I love being here, I love the people here, and everyone's embraced us in North Newton and Newton. We're ready to get this thing rolling."

A New Identity on Offense

Lawson outlined a vision for a multiple-formation, ball-control offense, emphasizing the run game while maintaining the ability to attack through the air.

The Threshers will see competition at quarterback, with several players in contention, while returning an experienced receiving corps that includes key playmakers Larry Cherry, Trevon Madison, and Josiah Buller, whom Lawson calls the "Ultimate Mennonite" for his work ethic and 100% buy-in.

Defensive Leadership and Opportunities

On defense, Lawson acknowledged the need to replace significant production at linebacker and along the defensive line, noting the importance of quick development for younger players. Defensive back Josh Ciers will anchor a secondary poised for a strong year, alongside contributors like Avery Richardson and Kevin Hill.

Challenging Start Ahead

Bethel's schedule opens with a demanding four-game stretch — at Southwestern, versus McPherson, at Friends, and against Kansas Wesleyan. Lawson welcomes the challenge.

"I'd prefer to start the season head-on and see what we're going to be," Lawson said. "We're a process-oriented team. If we line up and execute every snap the way we should, the scoreboard will take care of itself."

Looking Ahead

Bethel opens the season at Southwestern on August 30.
