Softball drops conference openers to Bethany

LINDSBORG, Kan. - The Bethel College Softball team opened up KCAC Conference play against the Bethany Swedes. Bethany jumped out to an early lead in game one cruising to a 10-0 (5 inn.) win before holding off Bethel in the second game 5-2.

GAME 1, L 10-0

Bethel recorded just five hits in the loss while stranding four of the five runners on base, with the fifth being thrown out trying to steal second base. The Swedes had 16 batters reach safely and stranded just six of them on base. After the first two frames, Bethany held onto a 5-0 lead. They added one more in the third and four in the fifth to enforce the run rule.

GAME 2, L 5-2

After two scoreless innings, Bethany broke the tie in the bottom half of the third inning as they pushed across three runs. Bethel got a run back in the top half of the fourth when Reagan Robinson drove in Ella Caudill who pinch ran for Ashleigh Bodine. The Swedes pushed across a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to extend their lead to 5-1. The Threshers tried to extend the contest in the seventh inning, but were only able to score one run. Dakota Piovesan drove in Cynae Wiley putting runners on the corners with no outs. After Piovesan stole second to put two in scoring position, Claire Broxterman struck out and Taylor Sanfillippo reached on an infield single to load up the bases. Following an out at the plate, Bethany was able to record a strikeout to end the Thresher threat.
