North Newton, Kan. — Bethel's (4-2, 4-2) battle with Tabor (2-4, 2-4) ended in heartbreak as a last-minute touchdown by Tabor handed the Threshers a 34-33 defeat on their home field.
Bethel got off to a balanced start, answering Tabor's early touchdown with a 10-yard rushing score from DJ Ciers to tie it up at 7-7 by the end of the first quarter. After falling behind in the second quarter, Bethel responded with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Ciers to Jimmy Martin, cutting the deficit to 17-14 at halftime.
The second half featured a game changing punt return from Larry Cherry, who sprinted 76 yards for a touchdown to give Bethel a brief 21-20 lead. Despite another Tabor touchdown late in the third, Bethel fought back in the fourth quarter. Ciers connected with Cherry again for two touchdown passes in the final two minutes, the second coming on a 48-yard bomb to take a 33-28 lead. However, Tabor's last-minute drive and score sealed Bethel's fate.
The Threshers will have a bye next week and will start their divisional games on October 19th @ McPherson.
