STERLING, Kan. - The Bethel College softball team concluded their road trip to begin KCAC play with a doubleheader with the Sterling Warriors. The Threshers took game one 7-5, before dropping game two 12-9.
Bethel struck first in the top of the first inning as
Meehlia Mendiola scored on a wild pitch after starting the game off with a single.
After Sterling answered with two runs in the bottom half, the Threshers responded immediately with two more of their own.
Dakota Piovesan and Mendiola both recorded an RBI in the inning.
After five runs being scored in the first inning and a half, neither team put up another run until the bottom of the fourth when the Warriors tied the contest 3-3.
Sterling scored the next two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the tie, taking the advantage into the final frame.
Just as they did in the second inning, Bethel responded to Sterling's runs with runs of their own.
This time, the Threshers pushed across four runs, three of them with two outs.
Bethel racked up 12 hits in the frame led by Mendiola who went 3 for 5 at the dish. Piovesan and
Ella Caudill both finished 2 for 4 with Piovesan recording two RBI and Caudill one.
Game two saw Sterling strike first as they pushed two runs across in the first.
Just as they did in the first game, Bethel answered Sterling's runs with runs of their own as
Claire Broxterman scored on a fielder's choice from
Marissa Harrison with
Anna Northcutt advancing home because of a Warrior obstruction.
Bethel added three more runs in the fourth to take the 5-2 lead as Harrison, Mendiola and Caudill all turned in RBI singles in the frame.
Sterling exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth as they opened up a 12-5 lead.
The Threshers once again tried to mount a seventh-inning comeback as they were able to push four runs across the dish but were held to just that.
Bethel once again recorded 12 hits in the contest as Broxterman finished 3 for 3 with 2 runs and a walk.
Cassie Albin and
Ashleigh Bodine both finished 2 for 4 with Albin scoring a run and Bodine recording a pair of RBI with a double.
The Threshers will be back in action on Saturday, March 23rd as they host Oklahoma Wesleyan with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM at Allen Wedel Field.
