Herrera wins ITA Central-West Regional Championship

MAIZE, Kan. - The Bethel College Women's Tennis team took part in the ITA West Regional Championships hosted by Kansas Wesleyan at Maize South High School. Daniela Herrera, seeded 9th, took down all of her competitors on her way to winning the championship for the second time in three years.

Herrera started off with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kaia Chiasson from College of Saint Mary in the round of 64.

Next she faced off with Mariana Ochoa from Southwestern who she defeated a week prior in the KCAC Fall Individual Championships. Herrera one again got the best of Ochoa 6-3, 7-6(7-3).

Daniela took on her first seeded opponent in her round of 16 matchup where she squared off with Thamara Pinto from Texas Wesleyan who was the #8 seed. Herrera handled Pinto fairly easily winning 6-2, 6-2.

Her next matchup came against top seeded Renee Acena from College of Saint Mary. Daniela won that matchup in a three set super 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 to advance to the semifinals.

Herrera's semifinal matchup came against the lowest seed left in the tournament, 12th seeded Marta Calvo Larraz of #19 William Woods. Daniela won the second set tiebreaker 7-6(7-3) to advance to the finals after taking the opening set 6-2.

In the championship, Herrera faced off with second seeded Hanna Lindeboom, also from William Woods. Daniela found her self in a tight spot after dropping the opening set 4-6. She picked up the second set 6-4 before winning the third set in a tiebreaker 7-6(7-2).

Herrera made it to the semifinals in doubles as well along with partner Fatima Nemi.

The 7th seeded pair won their first two matches against unseeded opponents 8-1 and 8-4 before taking down the #2 seeded Drent and Greefs from William Woods 8-6.

Following that victory the Thresher pair had to take on #3 seeded Pinto and Magday from Texas Wesleyan in the semifinals where they would fall 8-5 ending Herrera's hopes at the sweep.

The Threshers will be back in action on October 6th when they take on John Brown at Ward Tennis Center.
