Arley played varsity basketball for Bethel College from 1953 to 1957 earning four athletic awards.  He was a member of 1955-56 and 1956-57 Graymaroon teams that won back to back KCAC Championships.  Arley was named Honorable Mention All-KCAC in 1954-55 and First Team All-KCAC in 1953-54, 1955-56 and 1956-57.  He played in 100 games for Bethel, and was the team's leading scorer as a freshman averaging 17.50 points per game.  He also set a single game scoring record that year with 38 points against the College of Emporia.  The 1954-55, 1955-56, and 1956-57 teams won the Central Kansas Collegiate Basketball tournament held in Moundrige.  The Graymaroons compiled a 63-37 overall record during Arley's playing career, including a 36-20 record in conference play.  He was also played football for four years at Bethel.  Arley graduated from Bethel in 1957 with a degree in Industrial Arts with a minor in Physical Education.
