She was a member of the 1986 and 1987 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship teams and a unanimous All-KCAC and District 10 performer during her volleyball career.

A standout high jumper in track, Mayer was a three-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national qualifier and two-time KCAC high jump champion, earning All-KCAC and District 10 honors as well as NAIA All-America status.

As head coach for Bethel's volleyball program from 1994-2005, Mayer continued the strong tradition of outstanding volleyball by directing her teams to five conference championships and five tournament championships and qualifying for the NAIA Region IV tournament in eight out of 11 years.

Mayer coached 16 NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes, 52 KCAC Academic All-Conference athletes, 31 All-KCAC athletes, nine All-Region athletes, six KCAC Players of the Year and two NAIA All-Americans. She earned KCAC coach of the year honors five times. Her teams won back-to-back conference titles twice (1994 and 1995, 1999 and 2000) and she compiled a KCAC record of 161-43 (.789) and an overall record of 252-162 (.643). She ranks second in all-time wins.
