Dr. Herbert R. "Doc" Schmidt served the Threshers as a team physician for nearly 40 years beginning in the 1930s and continuing until 1975 when he lived in Paraguay for 10 years.   Doc was a founding member of the Bethel Clinic.  During his time at Bethel, he worked with injured athletes and attended every Bethel College football game both home and on the road.  In October of 1990, he and his wife, Mariam, became the first living contributors to donate one million dollars to Bethel College.   The College's track/football complex bears his name.  Doc Schmidt graduated from Bethel College in 1927 with a degree in Mathematics with a Chemistry minor.

Doc Schmidt died in 1999.
